It seems such a small thing and yet so very important to take time out to make sure that mental health isn’t going unnoticed, especially in the midst of the pandemic. The last four months have been rough on anyone’s mind or one's mental health, but it can be particularly hard for those who are struggling with depression and anxiety. While it is never enough to just deal with these two conditions alone, they do need to be kept in mind during this time of despair. Here are some tips and tricks that will definitely help improve your mood this October!
A Plan B
The first step towards getting better mental health is to start creating all-inclusive plans for yourself, not only for these difficult times but also for any other future events that may arise. Everyone should have at least some type of plan for themselves, and while you don't want to stress about what has happened around the world, make sure that there is something planned for how you're going to handle everything that comes up in the near future. This gives you a structure or routine that helps get your life back on track; that way even if you have something difficult going on, you'll know exactly what to do to get through it. Try not to let anything be too big a burden because that can become overwhelming if you're feeling down. When you choose one, think about what you would like to achieve; whether that means being able to get an education through online classes or pursuing a passion that you have. Make sure that you choose things that won't break you down or put extra strain on your personal budget. As easy as putting away money for a vacation can be to deal with the stress and pressure from work when things become difficult, try putting money towards mental health instead!
Get Enough Sleep
When you have trouble sleeping, it can be especially hard to manage your feelings. Sometimes you've got to shut those thoughts out completely or keep them going in your brain because it can cause a lot of unnecessary worry and strain. You're tired and don't really want to, but it's not your time to sleep in—so why not get enough sleep? If you need to cut back on sleep, try using a power nap app like Headway, which will give you more quality time to relax in some comfortable silence. Your subconscious mind has a tendency to get the last word, so make sure you're letting it go every once in awhile. Also, avoid caffeine before bed time because you'll feel drowsy, sluggish, and lethargic as soon as you wake up.
Workout
Another good way to get a sense of relief is by working out a little bit. Get a weightlifting class, try resistance training, or join Zumba. These things will help provide you with positive reinforcement, motivation, and some much needed exercise. Not only will working out improve your physical state, but it'll improve your self-esteem in ways that you might not realize. Just remember to be gentle on yourself and not push yourself too quickly. It'll only help to get your body moving and keep the negative energy within.
Try Yoga
Yoga is another great source of self-love and awareness. There are different forms of yoga to choose from, all including breathing techniques, meditation, relaxation, body alignment, and much more. Yoga is known for its healing properties, like the ability to release toxins, build a calm mind, and relieve pain, all while keeping a sense of gratitude in mind. Even though this particular form has gotten somewhat stigmatized today, many people still practice as part of their daily routines and can benefit greatly from doing a few poses every day. You can find lots of yoga videos online for free, so try practicing!
Drink More Water
One of the most common misconceptions people have while trying or attempting to fight their mental illness is that drinking more water will cure everything. In fact, a lack of water is a common symptom of depression since the brain works best when your blood levels are low. One study found an increase in cerebral diffusion when humans drank less water than recommended. So yes, drink a glass of water each night and watch it disappear before your eyes or you'll find yourself suffering from another bout of misery!
Meditate
Meditation is also a great tool when dealing with mental illness. Meditation allows you to focus on the present moment and gives you the chance to pay attention to what is happening with your mind. Just sitting down on a mat or cushion can help improve your overall understanding of how you feel. Most importantly, your body is getting a little rest and some time alone so that you can process all the mental turmoil that's happening inside. Once you reach a certain level of deep relaxation and comprehension, meditation becomes an active experience where you become aware of your surroundings without judgment.
